The room is a large convention centre set up with tables rather than standardised seating. It makes for a social occasion and invites its guests to sip on a drink during the entertainment.
The first Act introduced the Australian Tenors, the Performance Arts Western Sydney Ballet troupe accompanied by the eight-piece Southern Cross Orchestra and virtuoso guitarist Matthew Fagan.
After Act I, the buzz during intermission (at the incredibly long ladies bathroom line) was the anticipation of Marina Prior's debut performance in the Macarthur region.
Act II: Prior started strong and pleased a waiting audience with You Raise Me Up. After introducing the musical director and orchestra, Prior shamelessly plugs her two most recent CD titles, Both Sides Now and Encore. The perfect Mother's Day last minute gift idea! And "if you buy two, you get a free set of steak knives!" she jokes.
Prior runs the gamut from Berlin to Gershwin before she speaks with passion about her time playing Mary O'Hara in Harp On The Willow. She Moved Through the Fair is so beautifully [vocally] executed, perhaps only topped with the song that follows it, Danny Boy. Prior is what the SOLD OUT crowds came to see and with these beautiful folk songs, she certainly delivered.
After singing The Prayer with one of the Australian Tenors (Murray Mayday), Prior ends her set with Music of the Night. An encore song is introduced as Marina invites the Australian Tenors to sing Libiamo - Brindisi from Traviata - a real treat for those waiting for some gritty soprano stuff she does so well!
As the audience pleads, "More! One more!", 'The Prior' (as she is known to her fans) complies and sings Time To Say Goodbye with the Tenors. Another soprano treat for long-time fans.
Marina is touring (practically all year in 2013) and most probably coming to a town near you. Secure your tickets ASAP as every event she has played so far has sold out. Those expecting musical theatre stories will get them. Fans of her new albums and folk music will adore those songs performed live.
